    Main Focus:

    This full-time position requires a passion for materials, human and environmental health and the way this manifests itself on projects through a life-cycle perspective. This person should have a professional degree and 5 years of job experience. Work within the design profession is preferred, but not essential. Allied professions are certainly encouraged and may be preferred. Likewise, the educational background is flexible with preference to material science, environmental science and/or public health as it relates to the intersection of architecture, materials, human health and environmental impact.  


    • Expertise and thought leadership regarding materials, material science and human and environmental health across multiple offices, projects and market sectors
    • Work with project teams across market sectors and offices to select and specify lower impact materials on all HKS projects
    • Work with higher aspirational project teams with specific responsibility of advancing that project’s ability to select, specify and build with lower impact materials
    • Assisting in the creation and delivery of educational programming and materials
    • Building materials and sustainable strategies research
    • Represent HKS in industry committees, conferences and forums


    Key Attributes:

    • Passion for advancing the architectural profession’s knowledge, engagement and implementation of low impact, healthier building materials
    • Enjoys working with project teams and advocating for responsible material selection
    • Knowledge of Environmental Product Declarations (EPD’s) and Health Product Declarations (HPD’s)
    • Knowledge of “Substances of Concern” as they relate to human and public health
    • Working knowledge of embodied carbon in materials and whole buildings
    • Working knowledge or familiarity with life-cycle assessment process and software
    • Able to effectively communicate with clients and project teams in an inspiring and productive manner
    • Able to look at projects from various scales, the big picture and the details
    • Derives personal satisfaction from working on “the hard problem” because it matters
    • Articulate and comfortable public speaker able to lead and/or participate in sustainability charrettes with clients


    • Demonstrated ability to productively interface with design teams
    • Knowledge of latest analysis and design software, including Revit
    • Working familiarity with Life Cycle Assessment tools
    • Experience with professional material databases such as Giga, BuildingGreen, Pharos and others
    • Knowledge and experience with project delivery including material selection process, specifications, material and system procurement and submittal process
    • Knowledge of material science and relationship to human and environmental health and wellbeing
    • 5 - 10 years of experience in design is preferred, but not essential. Allied professional experience is applicable
